Golf, Fellowship and Community: Big Canoe Honors Jeff and Sandy Downing

August 21, 2026•3 min read

There are moments that remind us what makes Big Canoe such a special place to call home. The Men’s Fellowship Golf Benefit honoring Jeff and Sandy Downing was one of those moments.

Friends, neighbors, golfers, volunteers and local sponsors gathered for a meaningful day on the Big Canoe golf course. Although golf brought everyone together, the day was ultimately about something much greater: fellowship, encouragement and supporting members of our community.

Golf, Fellowship and Community

The morning began with golfers gathering for registration, warming up on the practice range and rolling a few final putts before tee time. There was a wonderful sense of fellowship throughout the course as teams prepared for the tournament and visited with friends.

From the opening remarks to the final holes, the atmosphere reflected the spirit of the occasion. It was a day filled with friendly competition, laughter and shared purpose—all surrounded by the natural beauty of Big Canoe.

The setting was beautiful, but the people made the event meaningful.

Honoring Jeff and Sandy Downing

The golf benefit was held in honor of Jeff and Sandy Downing, a special Big Canoe family surrounded by friends and neighbors who wanted them to know they were supported.

Seeing their photograph on the tournament program and watching so many people gather in their honor was a touching reminder of the strength found in community.

Events like this cannot remove every difficulty a family may face, but they can offer something equally important: encouragement, friendship and the reassurance that no one has to face challenging seasons alone.

Big Canoe Neighbors Showing Up for One Another

One of the things I treasure most about Big Canoe is the way people show up when someone in the community needs support.

That spirit was evident throughout the day. It could be seen in the golfers arriving early, the volunteers helping behind the scenes, the sponsors contributing to the event and the many friendly faces offering water, snacks and encouragement along the course.

Community is more than living near one another. It is built through relationships, compassion and a willingness to step forward when it matters.

The Men’s Fellowship Golf Benefit was a beautiful example of that kind of community in action.

Grateful to Participate

I was grateful to participate in the tournament and serve as a hole sponsor for this special event.

While I may not claim every golf shot as one worth remembering, I was proud to make a contribution to our team on the second shot of our first hole—a rare “girl power” moment that made the day especially fun.

More importantly, I appreciated the opportunity to spend time with friends and neighbors while supporting Jeff and Sandy. It was a privilege to be part of an event grounded in kindness and fellowship.

Thank You to Everyone Who Made the Day Possible

A benefit like this requires many people working together.

Thank you to the Big Canoe Chapel Men’s Fellowship for organizing the tournament and creating such a meaningful day. Thank you also to the golfers, volunteers, sponsors and everyone who contributed their time, resources and encouragement.

Each person played a role in making the event successful and in reminding Jeff and Sandy that their Big Canoe community stands beside them.

That is Big Canoe at its best.
