Lake Living in Big Canoe: A Local's Guide to Lake Petit, Lake Sconti & Lake Disharoon

Ask ten Big Canoe residents about "the lake" and you might get three different answers — because we have three of them, each with its own personality. After more than a decade specializing in this community (and living here myself), I've learned that matching a buyer to the right lake matters as much as matching them to the right house.

So consider this your local's introduction to lake life in Big Canoe — the first in my series of neighborhood guides.

Lake Petit: The Grand One

At 111 acres, Lake Petit is the largest of the three, and the deepest — nearly 100 feet at its lowest point. This is where you'll find the marina, the boat launch, and some of the most sought-after waterfront homes in the community. It's also an angler's lake, stocked with rainbow trout (the average catch runs a healthy size) alongside bass and crappie. You can buy your fishing license and gear right at the Marina Shack.

Mornings on Petit are the postcard: mist on still water, a kayak or two, the ridgelines doubled in reflection. Homes around the lake sit on roads with bird names — a charming quirk of Big Canoe's original naming scheme — and waterfront and lake-view listings here tend to draw the strongest attention when they hit the market.

One question thoughtful buyers ask, and should:what about the dam?The honest answer is that Lake Petit's dam is actively monitored with professional engineering oversight, and the spillway replacement sits among the community's top-priority capital projects. I've written a full, sourced article on exactly this topic —Lake Petit Dam — because informed buyers deserve documentation, not rumors.

Lake Sconti: The Elegant One

Lake Sconti is smaller and quieter, and it sits at the social heart of the community — the Clubhouse overlooks it, and the golf course winds around it. Dinner on the Clubhouse veranda with Sconti below and the mountains beyond is one of those Big Canoe moments that sells the lifestyle better than I ever could. The lake itself is ideal for a peaceful canoe paddle or unhurried fishing.

Homes near Sconti appeal to buyers who want to be close to the Clubhouse, golf, and dining — the "walk to dinner" crowd, as I think of them.

Lake Disharoon: The Fun One

If Petit is for anglers and Sconti is for diners, Disharoon is for grandkids. This is the community's swimming and recreation lake, home to the Swim Club: a sandy beach, a natural rockslide, paddleboats and paddleboards, picnic and barbecue areas, and a pool alongside. When families tell me they want their home to be "the one the grandchildren beg to visit," proximity to Disharoon is usually part of the answer.

The lake takes its name from Disharoon Creek, which runs through the community and feeds some of the prettiest low-elevation trail walks in Big Canoe.

The Quiet Extras: Blackwell Springs & Toad's Pond

Anglers get a bonus: two smaller waters, Blackwell Springs and Toad's Pond, near the North Gate in the Waterford area, both accessible with a fishing permit. They're the kind of local secret that makes residents smile when out-of-towners discover them.

Good to know:boating on Big Canoe's lakes is limited to canoes, kayaks, paddleboards, and electric motors — no gas engines. That single rule is why the water stays glassy and the mornings stay quiet, and it's a feature, not a limitation.

Buying on the Water: A Few Honest Notes

True waterfront in Big Canoe is limited — that's simple geography — so lakefront and lake-view homes command a premium and often move quickly. "Lake view" can mean anything from shoreline frontage to a seasonal winter glimpse through the trees, and the difference matters enormously to value. This is exactly where a decade of hyperlocal experience earns its keep: I know these shorelines house by house.

Here is a waterfront property that SOLD in January 2026 for $1,700,000.

Dreaming of mornings on the water?Tell me how you picture lake life — angler, entertainer, or grandkid magnet — and I'll show you the homes that match it.
